The judging for the first Brisbane Camera Group competition for the year was held last Monday night. Marie and I were upgraded from B Grade to AB Grade members, so the competition has heated up. I was just a little nervous attending the judging wondering how my images had performed.
Creative is defined as “altered reality” and it encourages experimentation with new ideas going beyond a simple photograph. I had worked some images but wasn’t overly happy with the results so I submitted 2 images in the set subject “Creative” and 2 images in the Open section.
Once the judging of the set subject acceptances was completed and my images hadn’t been critiqued, I knew that both had won awards. Each received a merit which was a great outcome. While there was some speculation on how I created “A Sketchy Recollection”, the image “Day Dreaming” received some very constructive feedback. The background was considered too bright and overpowering and that it should be more “dreamy” to reflect the title of the image. I plan to do some further work on the image to address this feedback.
My images in the Open section had mixed results. The image “Toowong Tower” did not win any award and it was marked down for distractions on the left side and flaring near the top. Interestingly, the distraction comment was not unexpected. However, I hadn’t noticed the flaring. It really is a case of being more attentive to detail and doing a careful review of the image for submission. I have reworked the image and both versions are in this post.
“Morning Tea” was awarded a merit and the feedback was also beneficial. The background was distracting to the subject of the image and needed to be toned down and even blurred. I have done further work and both versions are in this post.
I am feeling quite chuffed to start the year in a higher grade with 3 merits and 1 acceptance. Hopefully this means that my photography is continuing to improve. Next competition topic is “Triptych” which is a new challenge for me. I am now turning my thoughts to what I can do with this subject.
As I have included “before” and “after” images in this post, I am keen to hear what you think and which version you prefer. Let me know your opinions in the comments about which versions you prefer and why. Thanks for reading and sharing my journey with me.
